Deloris R. Greene

Deloris Greene, affectionately known as “Dee” or “DD”, was called home to Glory by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, February 16, 2025. Dee, was born on December 11, 1943 to the late Mozell Davis and Ned Keys. She was the youngest of her four siblings. Dee received her education and graduated from John Ford High School in 1963, formerly known as St. Matthews Colored School. It was renamed to John Ford high school in 1949 after the long-term principal and educator John Andrew Ford. “DD” was an active student during her years in attendance at John Ford. She was a member of the Library and Mathematics Clubs in addition to serving as the team’s mascot and playing on the basketball team. The girls’ basketball team, The Mighty Trojanettes had an impressive 13-2 record that year and was the Lower State Runner-Up for the 1962-1963 basketball season. Shortly after graduating from high school, she like so many of her associates who did not have the means to attend higher education, moved north for better job opportunities. She worked as a key punch operator and a stenographer in the NYC Court System before landing a job as a Traffic Enforcement Agent, formerly known as Meter Maids in 1967. There she remained until 1991, rising to the rank of Lieutenant through Civil Service Exams and promotions. At an early age, she received Christ as her Savior and was baptized at Mount Nebo United Methodist Church. After arriving in NYC, she joined Missionary Baptist Church of Love along with her sisters. There she was a faithful member and served on the usher board until relocating to Georgia in the nineties. In 1979, she gave birth to her only child and daughter Charlise Katonya Greene. She and Charlise relocated to Decatur, Georgia in the early nineties. There she joined Grace Community Christian Church under the leadership of Pastor Cody. She was active on the usher board at Grace, Ministry of Help and Fundraiser coordinator until rheumatoid arthritis prevented her from performing her duties. Never to be called a slacker, she worked for the Dekalb School System for eleven years, retiring in January 2005. She also worked at a private Daycare facility, owned and operated by her dear friend, Minister Tammy Clark, which unfortunately had to close due to the health of the owner. Furthermore, she became very active in a non-profit organization, SASSY (South Dekalb Association for Super Special Youth) since its inception in the 1990’s. This non-profit filled a void in the community for adults with learning disabilities to participant in competitive sports like, basketball, bowling, bocci, softball, volleyball, track and field and a whole host of other events such as the Special Olympics. Moreover, she helped the company raised funds selling candies and other goods at local events. Those who knew her, knew she made the best potato salad until rheumatoid arthritis prevented her from making her favorite dish. After battling a lengthy illness, she is finally free. “Dee” is preceded in death by her parents, and only brother Jack Charles Greene. She is survived by her only child, Charlise Katonya Greene of Decatur, Georgia, three sisters, Mae Helen Melton (nee Greene) of East Elmhurst, NY, Annie Maude Davis of Orangeburg, South Carolina and Virginia Dennis (nee Greene) of Bronx, NY. A special friend Charles Reid and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends who loved her dearly.
